Finish Lefty

Do you know you have two brains? Well not literally, but figuratively you do.

The right hemisphere and the left hemisphere, while each of these "parts' to your brain are necessary for your brain to function "normally," both parts have their own "jobs" that they are responsible for. For all intensive purposes, your right brain can be seen as the irrational partier, creative, random, and intuitive. While your left brain can be seen as the analytical "good" guy, who rationalizes before acting and always has an objective opinion.

In order for us to further discuss the right and left hemispheres of the brain, we must first understand how information makes its way into our brain. Information makes its way into our brain via the five senses we have been blessed with, those five senses being sight, taste, touch, sound, and sense. Without the aid of our senses information would not make its way into our brains, we would not be able to process the differences between sounds, visions, or tastes.

Now that we know the basics of how information enters the brain, we can begin to understand the difference between the left and right hemispheres. The right hemisphere is responsible for recognizing symbols, actions, or signs. The right hemisphere "sees" a cat and recognizes "oh that's a cat," the left hemisphere then jumps in with its analytical aspect and adds information to the right brains recognition, one could expect the left-brain to say something like "oh, that's Uncle Tom's cat." The left-brain further reiterated the information the right brain had recognized, now the brain as a whole can "paint a complete picture."

Recent research on the two separate hemispheres has shown that people often "favour" one side of their brain over the other. This newer information can come in handy when deciding how one learns or trying to teach a group of "right brainers" or "left brainers." For instance, once we are able to categorise whether we have a room full of dreamers (righties), or thinkers (lefty's) we are then able to tailor training towards their differences in thinking.

Training a room full of right brainers effectively would involve a laid-back form of training, incorporating creativity into your training approach. On the other hand, your lefty's are going to want to know every detail, step by step from beginning to end and don't be surprised if they then ask for the information to be repeated. By looking at the difference in thinkers, one would assume that the left brainers are better learners, but that is not always the case, left brainers can sometimes get "stuck" on the minor details and miss the complete picture. While right brainers can sometimes miss important minor details in an effort to finish the project and get the project all wrong. As a trainer it is important to keep in mind what type of "brain" you are training and where that brain belongs in the grand scheme of your company.
