As a music producer I hear it all the time. A friend of a friend wrote a great song recently that's just perfect for Don Henley or Shania Twain or (insert your favorite singer here) and they just need a little help so they can get it to the famous artist and get it on their next CD.
It seems logical. Alan Jackson records songs. Mine is as good as any on the radio, the only thing missing is for Alan to hear my song. Soon after I'll hear him doing it on the radio and start cashing royalty checks. Well... I'm not about to say that's never happened, it has. I'm not going to say it won't happen, it could. But the odds against it? High. There are many more songs written every year than there are slots for and proven professional songwriters with a history of hits have the inside track on those big time artist cuts. But if you want to throw your hat in the ring, here's how to throw it a lot closer to the mark:
Leaving the issue of whether it's really as good a song as you believe aside, first, you really need to have a professional demo recording made. Song publishers are the gatekeepers to the major labels you're most likely to see success with as a new songwriter. And the best publishers are used to hearing extremely polished demos. They may not necessarily need to be elaborate full band demos but even just a piano/vocal should feature a pro pianist, a high quality singer and should be recorded using professional equipment and engineering. It may cost as much as $1,200 to have a custom, full band recording made but this is the music business with the emphasis on business. To be in a business requires an investment that you'll hopefully see a huge return on. Do you believe in your song or not?
Next, have CD copies made and have your name, address and phone number imprinted on each copy. Create typewritten lyric sheets and imprint them with your contact information as well.
The next step is a numbers game: get those demo copies into the hands of every publisher, record company, artist, artist band member and other industry pro that you can. If your song is really a hit, before long someone will notice and your phone will ring with the life changing news.
