Purchasing a multi effects pedal for the guitar is a very cost-effective way of obtaining many guitar effects, without the cost of purchasing each effect individually. For a fraction of the cost of buying individual stomp boxes, you can buy a single unit that has all of the most popular effects. An added benefit is the amount of space that a multi effects pedal can saved when compared to the individual boxes.
It is important to note that not all multi effects pedals are created equal. It is crucial that you research the product to learn the pros and cons before you invest your money into a pedal. If you are just beginning, you need to find a unit that is economical, but also something that you can grow into. After all, you may want to play live at some point, and you wouldn't want to use a non-quality multi effects pedal that you can't rely on. In other words, make sure you know what you are buying. Read the reviews, learn the specs, and get more educated so that you are better able to find a unit that will suit your needs.
As time goes by, multi effects pedals are becoming more and more advanced. They are able to play multiple effects at one time, which is great considering that many guitarists choose to play with more than one effect at a time. Also, the effects themselves are becoming better quality. There used to be a noticeable difference between an effect on a multi effects unit, and the same effect from an individual pedal. However, as technology improves, the difference is becoming less and less obvious.
Here are a few considerations that I use when purchasing an effects pedal.
1. How much is it? If you only can spare $200, then you don't want to spend all of your time looking at $1500 units.
2. How many effects does the unit have? Most multi effects pedals have many of the most popular effects. Though, I've seen some multi effects pedals with only 4 effects, such as the Carl Martin Quattro. You want to make sure that the pedal you're considering buying has the effects that you're interested in included.
3. What is the pedal constructed from? You want to get the most quality unit for the money. Something preferably made of steel. This is especially true if you tend to get carried away and literally stomp on your pedals when you play.
4. How is the brand's reputation? Over the years my experience has been mostly with Boss and DigiTech, and I've been happy with them. If a brand has a bad reputation, or you can't find information on them, then steer clear. Better safe then sorry.
So, there are a few things that I like to consider before buying any effects pedal. Just remember that your goal is to get the most bang for your buck. Purchasing a multi-effects pedal for the guitar is not a decision to be taken lightly.
I've played guitar for around 15 years, and I remember how confusing it can be for a beginner that is considering purchasing guitars and equipment. You can find more information on multi effects guitar pedals, as well as other guitar related articles at Guitar Equipment and Resources.
