So, you have your first guitar and you want to play it like Slash or Jimi Hendrix. Anyone can create a riff by themselves, but it takes a handful of accessories to get the right sound. Depending on whether you're playing an acoustic or electric, you may spend more or less than if you played the other. You should already have the basics: picks, straps, and extra strings. Electric players have to add audio cables and a practice amp to that list. One accessory to add for either is a guitar tabs encyclopedia, which shows every chord used and also riffs to practice your skills.
Now that you got the basics down, you should get a stand or case to keep your guitar safe and free from dust. Cases not only are available at cheap prices, but they also come in different shapes. Some guitars require a specific shape due to the design and type. Others can be used with any type and even have compartments to keep all of your basic gear together in one place. It's recommended that you get a hard shell than a gig bag to protect it from physical damage.
While acoustic guitar players can get out and start jamming from here, electric players have a couple more guitar accessories to grab. The practice amp is great for creating riffs, but in order to take advantage of them, you'll need at least 2 effect pedals. One must be some type of distortion, while the other is up to the player. Reverb, delay modulator, wah-wah, volume and compressor are some of the various pedals. Within those types, you can change the guitar's sound to almost anything (including a Sitar). One to be aware of is a Talk Box. This type requires a microphone to use, but can be very fun to play with as well. You can also get a multi-pedal: one box with multiple foot switches and effects.
To perform live, you'll have to take the next step in guitar accessories: performance amps. For electric players, Line 6 and Marshall are two of the best and come in multiple sizes. Some have effects built-in to save a few bucks on pedals, while others have extra outputs to record on the spot. If you have an acoustic, you'll need a microphone to play louder than the guitar is capable of doing alone.
With all of this, you should be able to decide on which guitar accessories you want and need. There are plenty of shops online and retail stores that carry just about everything you're going to be looking for. Also, check to see if any of the stores sell used or refurbished guitar accessories. This way, you can save money and obtain a limited warranty in case of failure. Once you've gone on your musical shopping spree, creating your own songs and riffs should become second nature in no time at all. With the right guitar accessories, you will be the next great guitar player.
