The Auto Club Europa (ACE) has just published the results of its tyre test ('ACE Lenkrad', issue 3/2009), where the Barum Bravuris 2 is given the rating 'highly recommended'. Despite being a low-cost tyre, the Bravuris 2 came in just below the winning tyre and three other high-priced products. In all, the test featured nine tyre models, size 195/65 R 15 H; the Asian tyre imports were either not recommended or only with reservations. In its test entitled "Worth the money?", the editorial team at ACE Lenkrad compared nine summer tyres in three different price categories. Designed for compact to medium range cars, the Barum Bravuris featured in the test caused "quite a surprise". It was not just the tyre's attractive purchase price that helped it pick up points - its driving characteristics in the wet, plus its economical performance, meant that the Bravuris 2 was well able to hold its own against the high-price competitors. It also kept up nicely in the handling test (dry slalom) on dry roads. In terms of braking distance on dry asphalt, it came in close to the expensive tyre models. The editorial team's conclusion: The manufacturer "can be proud of the Barum budget brand - this tyre came away well in all safety assessments, thereby gaining the test rating 'highly recommended'. The Continental Extreme Contact DWS tire

The ExtremeContact DWS (DWS for Dry, Wet & Snow) is Continental's Ultra High Performance All-Season radial developed for drivers of sports cars, sports coupes, performance sedans and sport trucks. The ExtremeContact DWS is designed to satisfy their year-round driving needs by blending dry and wet road performance with light snow and slush traction. ExtremeContact DWS features an advanced silica-based, high-grip, all-season tread compound molded into a unique asymmetrical tread design with stable shoulder blocks and a continuous, notched intermediate rib on the outboard side to enhance responsiveness and cornering stability. The center of the tread features independent blocks separated by high-angle, criss-cross grooves to provide the biting edges necessary to deliver wet road and light snow traction while independent inboard shoulder blocks help disperse water to further enhance hydroplaning resistance and foul weather traction. The ExtremeContact DWS features Tuned Performance Indicators — visible letters molded into the second rib from the outboard shoulder to alert drivers of the tire's performance levels. A visible "DWS" indicates the tire has sufficient tread depth for dry conditions, as well as wet roads and light snow. After the "S" has worn away, the remaining "DW" indicates the tire only has sufficient tread depth for dry and most wet road conditions. And after the "W" and "S" have both worn away, the remaining "D" indicates the tire has appropriate tread depth for dry conditions only. The tire's internal structure includes twin steel belts reinforced with spirally wound jointless nylon cap plies to provide long-term integrity under high-speed conditions while reducing weight and helping to provide more uniform ride quality.
The Continental Winter Contact TS810 winter tire
ContiWinterContact TS810 Performance Winter / Snow tires were developed by Continental Tire to combine good snow traction and ride comfort with European high-speed capability. ContiWinterContact TS810 tires are for the drivers of sport coupes and luxury sedans who require winter driving traction on dry, wet and snow-covered roads. The ContiWinterContact TS810 winter / snow tire features Continental Tire's innovative silica-enhanced component compound molded into an asymmetric tread design with broad, rounded outer shoulder blocks to enhance dry road handling. These are combined with notched or independent intermediate tread blocks separated by wide circumferential grooves (three grooves in 215 mm and smaller sizes with four grooves in 225 mm and larger sizes) to enhance snow traction, as well as wet road traction and hydroplaning resistance. The tread design features 20% wider sipes on the inner shoulder and sipe spacers that prevent the sipes from closing during contact to provide the multiple biting edges necessary to help grip snow and ice and enhance winter traction without resorting to traditional metal studs. ContiWinterContact TS810 Performance Winter / Snow tires meet the industry's severe snow service requirements and are branded with the mountain/snowflake symbol. Install Continental ContiWinterContact TS810 tires in sets of four only. Due to the traction capabilities of the ContiWinterContact TS810, Continental recommends using ContiWinterContact TS810 tires only in sets of four to provide the best handling characteristics and tire performance.
The Dunlop Direzza DZ101 tire
The Direzza DZ101 is Dunlop's Ultra High Performance Summer tire for the drivers of sport compact cars. The Direzza DZ101 shares the Direzza name with Dunlop racing tires used in the Japanese SUPER GT Championship and was developed to provide crisp and responsive handling. The Direzza DZ101 is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice. The Direzza DZ101 features Dunlop's specially formulated Silicarbon Matrix tread compound (combines silica and carbon black) to enhance grip. The compound is molded into a directional tread design featuring rigid shoulder blocks and two wide, straight tread channels with long, oblique grooves to combine responsive handling, stable cornering and hydroplaning resistance. The tire's internal structure includes twin steel belts reinforced by Dunlop's Jointless Band (JLB) spirally wound nylon cord cap ply to stabilize the tread area enhancing tread wear, handling and high-speed capability. A polyester cord body enhances ride quality while Max Flange Shields help resist rim damage due to accidental curbing.
The Dunlop Graspic DS3 winter tire
The Graspic DS-3 represents the third generation of Dunlop Digi-tire Studless Ice and Snow winter tires developed for the drivers of coupes and sedans, as well as family minivans and crossover utility vehicles. Graspic DS-3 tires use Dunlop's Digital Rolling Simulation II technology (computer enhanced design) and premium tread compounding to deliver wintertime traction in snow and on ice. Graspic DS-3 studless winter / snow tires feature a silica-based, glass fiber-reinforced tread compound molded into a symmetric independent block tread design to provide grip in snow and on ice without resorting to traditional metal studs. High-density Miura-shaped sipes (featuring a three-dimensional interlocking zigzag design) help stiffen the tread blocks to promote steering feel and even tread wear. The Graspic DS-3's Digital Rolling Simulation II technology helps optimize tread pattern stiffness to enhance footprint pressure distribution for improved grip and treadlife. Graspic DS-3 winter tires meet the industry's severe snow service requirements and are branded with the mountain/snowflake symbol. NOTE: The first 55% of the Graspic DS-3's tread depth features Dunlop's high-grip silica-enhanced compound while the remaining 45% features an all-season tread compound. Snow platform indicators (basically, snow wear bars) are molded into the Graspic DS-3's tread grooves to inform the driver when ice and snow traction will be reduced as the tire's tread wear reaches the point where the premium high-grip silica tread compound is about to wear away. Install Graspic DS-3 tires in sets of four only. Due to the traction capabilities of the Graspic DS-3, Dunlop recommends using Graspic DS-3 tires only in sets of four to provide the best handling characteristics and tire performance. UTQG: Uniform Tire Quality Grading Standards do not apply to winter tires.
