If you want your audience to hear every part of your performance while you are freestyle rapping, then you want to make sure that you have spent some time working and practicing with your mic. Our discussion today will center around the use of your microphone.
Two terms that are extremely important for any freestyler to know are the terms feedback and distortion. If you hear a lot of high-pitched noises coming through your speakers, then that is what is known as feedback. Some of the causes of feedback include having the microphone pointing to a speaker that you are standing to close to or having the volume raised to high.
Distortion can occur when you are holding the mic entirely to close to your mouth. When you are holding the mic, start off by holding the mic approximately 2 or 3 inches away from your mouth. You don't want your mic to be so far away that your sound starts to fade.
Again experiment with this by moving the mic away from your mouth until you the sound starts decreasing. You won't want to take the mic any farther away than this point.
You want to experiment with your microphone before you come to the show. The location of your mic to your mouth will vary slightly for every individual because everyone sings slightly different and can project their voice at different levels.
Remember that you won't be freestyling at the same volume level throughout your performance, so you must know how and where to adjust you mic as you are performing. You may have times that you are raising the volume of your voice, using higher notes or using lower notes. You want to make sure that your mic is held in the best position so that your audience will hear the best sound and tone of your voice.
