Stop Panic Attacks Using the Cognitive Model

By understanding how your mind works you can stop panic attacks. You feel the way you do because of how you think. The cognitive model of recovery is a drug free way to recover from panic attacks.

What if you could stop your panic attacks by simply changing the way you think? You wouldn't have to take drugs or medications, or even spend time in group therapy sessions. All you would need to do is understand how you mind works in terms of anxiety and use a few techniques to alter these brain patterns. This is what the cognitive model is based on.

Cognition is a technical term that simply means a thought. When you experience anxiety or anticipation to something that may cause a panic attack you are telling yourself that something bad is going to happen. For example, my chronic panic attacks began after giving a speech. I had a bad experience and after that day I began having panic attacks daily. I had to give this same presentation several times a year. Even though I had worked on overcoming anxiety I still had much fear that I would have a panic attack during the next presentation. When the day came that I had to present again, after having regular  panic attacks for a few months, I had a very difficult time keeping clam. As I sat in my seat waiting for that moment where I would have to present again I was terrified. I tried to think differently and say to myself that I didn't care what anyone thought of me. I gave myself encouragement by thinking about talents that I have and that I was the expert in the room for the topic I was to speak about. However, it didn't matter. I still had much anticipation before the speech. Surprisingly, I gave the speech and did not have a panic attack.

There was no technique I was aware of that I used to stop a potential panic attack from happening. My anxiety was based on a distortion. And the cognitive model addresses this and a few related concepts:

1. If you think a certain way you will feel that way.
2. Anxiety is caused by a distortion in your thinking. You are kidding yourself.
3. By changing the way you think you will feel better and stop panic attacks.

In my case, I remembered that I had a panic attack the previous time I gave this presentation and that it triggered my condition. I thought my heart would begin racing so fast that I wouldn't be able to speak (which is what happened before). However, that was a distortion. My heart didn't race like that once I began speaking. In fact, my heart was racing the fastest about 1-2 minutes before I had to take the stage. Once I began speaking and noticed that I had no anxiety I became relaxed.

The point of this example is that panic attacks can be caused by distorted thoughts. You may have a fear of something that doesn't really exist. From my experience you can't simply psyche yourself into thinking differently. You have to prove to yourself that there is nothing to fear and sometimes this can only happen by facing the fear.
