The Dean Razorback DB is a pretty serious metal machine and highly recommended for metal and shred guitarists on a budget.
Metal guitar master Dimebag Darrell entered into a partnership with Dean guitars before his unfortunate death to design the ultimate metal guitar. This instrument, known as the Razorback, is as deadly sounding as it is deadly looking. The jagged design makes it clear that this is no old-fashioned instrument!
Dean makes a number of Razorback instruments to appeal to a wide variety of different budgets. The features and construction of the instruments dictate the cost. Our current review model, the Razorback DB, is perhaps a more budget-oriented instrument, but don't mistake inexpensive with cheap.
Features
We looked at the Classic Black model, but it's also available in Metallic White. It sports a mahogany body and neck with a rosewood fretboard with Pearl razor inlay at the 12th fret. Dean-designed humbuckers, Grover tuners, and a tune-o-matic style bridge finish out the feature set.
Performance
Once we started testing the guitar, the action was the first thing we noticed. The Razorback DB has low action without much buzzing at all, once we tweaked the bridge and neck slightly. The instrument lends itself to super-fast fretwork. Dimebag would be proud!
The Dean-designed humbuckers produced the kinds of sounds we hoped for on a guitar such as this. The lows and highs were pronounced and great for metal or shred guitar, but not terribly versatile, as you might expect.
That's not really a slam because one look at this guitar, and you know it's not mean to play "How High the Moon." It's a one-trick pony, but that's to be expected. It's quite a good pony, though!
Just about the only complaint we have is that the included case seems pretty flimsy for continued heavy usage, but for an instrument as inexpensive at the Razorback DB, you really shouldn't expect a pro-level case.
The Bottom Line
For the price, it's a pretty serious metal machine and highly recommended for metal and shred guitarists on a budget. Its solid metal sound and ease of play make it a wise purchase for someone who needs a killer metal axe at a fair price.
