If you are a fan of the group Pantera, the guitar guy Darrell Abbot, or metal music in general, you may have a goal of learning to play like Dimebag Darrell. As one of the most influential guitarists of the late 80's and early 90's, he set the standard for producing riffs and licks that kept his fans screaming for more. His solos were fast, creative, and most of all; they were fun to listen to. If you are interested in learning to play like Darrell Abbott, there are a few things you will need to do.
Practice...practice...practice. Darrell's father was a country and blues guitarist who taught his son how to play from the time he was big enough to get his hands around the guitar neck. Darrell spent hours and hours with a guitar in his hand. Don't be discouraged if you are already older than Dimebag was when he started out...but do understand that there is just no substitute for time spent with your instrument. You need to set up a regular practice schedule and stick to it. Be sure you learn how to play scales in all the different keys and use all parts of the fret board.
Learn basic music theory. Many guitar players assume that theory is for formally trained musicians, or students in a university music course, but they are wrong about that. Darrell Abbott learned the basics of scales, key changes, intervals, and rhythm from his dad, and it was his knowledge of these fundamentals that allowed him to create his own unique solos that were unlike those played by anyone else. If you have ever tried to make up a guitar solo on your own, you will realize that just charging up and down the neck of the guitar does not automatically produce a solo that many people would like to listen to. You need to combine the notes in a way that has some musicality to it and stay within the key of the song you are playing. The knowledge of music theory will help you immeasurably here.
Don't be afraid to play for others. Darrell Abbott began entering guitar contests as a child and started winning them at the same time. By the time he was 16 he had won so many competitions that his native Texas barred him from entering any more. If you want to play like Darrell, you don't need to win every guitar event in your state, but you do need to get comfortable playing in front of an audience. Any performer will tell you that there is a big difference between playing in the privacy of your practice room and playing where other people can hear you. Adrenalin, emotions, and stage fright all play a big part in your performance. Professional musicians often get more energy from the crowd as they play, but beginners may feel almost "frozen" at the thought that people are listening to them. If that's a problem for you, start out small. Practice a song or solo until you feel confident with it, then tape yourself playing and listen to the recording. When you think you are playing as well as you can, invite a few friends or family members to listen to you. Don't be discouraged if they don't heap praise on you at first. Realize that you are just starting out and take any criticism as helpful hints for how you can improve. Use casual events like picnics, campfires, and barbeques for low-pressure places to get used to playing for other people.
