When Line 6 released their DL-4 Stompbox in 2000, a Delay modeler pedal, little did they know the critical acclaim this "little green monster" would generate. From Phil Keaggy to Eric Johnson, countless world-class guitarists count the DL-4 as a go-to delay pedal. Why all the fuss? What makes the DL-4 Delay pedal such a popular item amongst guitarists?
For starters, the Line 6 DL-4 contains 16 delay pedal models based on such classic delays as the Maestro EP-1 Echoplex (a personal favorite of Eric Johnson) to the T.C. Electronic 2290. It contains models from such effects manufacturers as Roland and Electro-Harmonix, just to name a few more.
Plus, it has a built-in 14 second looping function, which includes backwards looping. When not in looping mode, you can store up to three presets. Plus, there's a tap-temp footswitch, so you can set the delays to match the tempo of the song you're playing.
If these sound features weren't enough, the Line 6 DL-4 Delay is also built to last. It's a little green tank! Personally, I've owned one for about six years, and while it's beat up to be sure, it still sounds as great as it did when I first purchased it.
The DL-4 can operate in both true bypass and buffered-bypass mode. I prefer the latter because it doesn't cut off your delay trails (and it makes the volume more consistent as well).
The DL-4 Delay can operate in either stereo or mono mode, and it includes a jack for an optional expression pedal so you can control the delay parameters in real time.
So, while Line 6 amps earned them their initial positive reputation, it seems that their effects pedals will do the same. Make no mistake about it. The Line 6 DL-4 Delay pedal is a keeper!
