SMEG is the Rolls Royce of appliances. The company's line of iconic kitchen appliances goes back to its beginnings in the 1950's. SMEG appliances were famous in throughout the 1950's and 1960's and have been enjoying a resurgence in popularity due in part to the popularity of their iconic "retro" fridges. SMEG has now expanded its product line to include free standing cookers and washing machines. Since its foundation in 1948 by Italian Vittorio Bertazzoni, SMEG has continued to delight its customers with its innovative design style and use of bright colors.
The founder of SMEG fridge, Vittorio Bertazzoni, was from a small village in Italy called Guastalla. He began his career as a manufacturer of enameled appliances. His unique designs and choice of unusual colors quickly gained him fame as a designer of quality appliances. The name of the company is an acronym for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla, meaning "metal enameling factory of Guastalla. The iconic acronym is popular due to the fact that the real name is a bit difficult for non-Italian customers to remember or pronounce.
Though SMEG had very humble beginnings as a manufacturer or kitchen appliances, their innovative design concepts quickly gained them popularity among European and American homeowners. The sleek design of the SMEG fridge was complimented by the variety of bright colors the fridge came in, giving consumers a way to brighten up their kitchen when they purchased a new fridge. SMEG refrigerators are not only appealing aesthetically, they are quality crafted and meant to last a life time. Original 1950's SMEG refrigerators can still be found working in kitchens today.
SMEG fridges have become media icons and have been featured in such films as "East Enders" and "V for Vendetta." Everybody is familiar with the SMEG aesthetic even if they might not know it. Their fame has kept them popular with both the old and the new generations.
Today the SMEG Company is still in the hands of the Bertazzoni family today. Though Vittorio has himself has retired, the company is run today by Roberto Bertazzoni. He is the current CEO and chairman of SMEG. SMEG remains a private ownership business and its headquarters is remains in Guastalla where it all began.
