Since shutters are such a good option for interior window treatment, the discerning homeowner will need to know some of the pitfalls that may occur during choosing and installation. Shutters depend for their good insulating qualities partly on fit, so each window should be measured separately and the shutters custom-made to fit. These are custom made shutters.
The term custom shutterscan be used by less than honest companies to indicate a means of shutter installation that will not give a true custom fit. They take factory-made shutters and cut bits off or add strips to them until they go into the window cavity. This kind of installation causes other problems. For instance the tracks may not be level and this will interfere with the smooth opening and closing. The term used should be customised shutters because that is what they are.
Sometimes the homeowner will pay top dollars for an inferior product in the belief that he is getting quality. In many cases the shutter names end in the word wood when another product is actually used to make them. For instance artwood is actually made of styrene, while composite wood contains plastic and wood waste. Micronwood is a synthetic material and Polywood is a polymer.
So be wary of shutters with names ending in wood, because they will not be true timber products. Western Red Cedar is a true timber that is very stable, not likely to warp or sag. Also take care when a shutter is referred to as fixed. This means exactly what it says and the shutter cannot be folded back from the window cavity.
Make sure that cheap hardware is not used on the shutters because that will very likely cause problems such as panels falling out and louvres becoming unfixed.
If you get a shutter specialist to install your chosen shutters it will eliminate potential problems. Many curtain or blind installers are not trained or set up to install shutters. When getting quotes from shutter companies make sure you compare them carefully. Shutters from Australian installers are usually no more expensive than most others. Some companies may not quote the full cost, leaving out such elements as GST or even the actual cost of the installation. They may also quote for a shutter that is not made of solid timber.
When you compare quotes you also need to ensure that all other materials such as the fittings are the same for each quote. Shutter styles can differ considerably also; some have bifold panels; others are sliding or hinged. So all things should be taken into account when comparing quotes.
