Clamp Acoustic

Many people find that they can play the chords to some songs just fine on the guitar, sing the song separately just fine, but cannot do both together. The problem usually is that playing the song is easiest in one key, and another key is most compatible with your voice.

Advanced guitar players can learn different fingerings in order to play a song in a different key. Unfortunately, this typically requires barre chords which mean holding down all of the strings on the guitar at once with one finger. This is one of the most difficult and frustrating things for guitar players to learn.

A more practical approach is a small device called a Capo. Essentially it looks like a small clamp that holds down all of the guitar strings at a certain fret. By shortening all the strings by the same amount, it changes the pitch of each string by the same amount. With the capo engaged, you can the play the same chords just above the capo. The frets will be a bit closer together when using the capo but this should not be difficult to adapt to.

Then, move the capo up and down until you find a good place where you can play and sing the song in the same key! A capo will cost you $10 to $20 at any guitar shop and multiplies the potential of a guitar with almost no effort or skills! Keep in mind that a Capo can only make the pitch of a guitar go up and not down. If you do want to go down, it's possible to detune your guitar down a half step or full step but this requires much more effort than a Capo.
