The key to writing a book in just one weekend is to be prepared and to have a good writing system behind you. Without a good system you'll never finish in a weekend. For more information on the system we use see the bottom of the article. Now, let me clarify what I mean by a short book. This is typically -- but not exclusively -- an eBook length book of about 7,500 words or 30 pages long. Short for a traditional book but moderate for an eBook.
Friday night
Friday is planning night. In fact, it's where you will really write your book. The words you write over the next two days will merely fill in the blanks. Start by defining exactly what you are going to write. What is the book about? Why are you writing it? Who are you writing it for? What problems will it solve? Why bother to read it? What do you need to cover? That process should take you about an hour. Now, put it away and go do something else. Walk the dog. Play with the kids. Have supper.
An hour or two later go on to write your whole book. Okay, I'll be honest, you're going to write your book but not with words. You'll use ideas and thoughts in a cognitive technique called a concept map. Like a mind map it allows information to flow out of your brain in the order it chooses. The diagram then puts it into a sequence which you can use. The concept map is a structured mind map that ensures the sequence works for a book.
For a 30 page book, you'll need an introduction, and a conclusion of about 5 pages each and two chapters of 10 pages each. For each of these chapters you'll need about 22 sub-topics or sections. Now start filling in your content map. Don't worry about the introduction or conclusion. When you've covered the map with three chapters of 22 topics you're finished. Look at what you've got. Fill in any holes. Now put down up to ten points for the introduction. And the same for the conclusion. This process should have taken you about an hour.
Now, number the topics. At the beginning of each chapter, you'll have an extra introduction section. At the end of the chapter, you'll have a conclusion and a bridge section. Go on until you reach the last chapter. The concluding chapter won't have a bridge of course. Put all the paper away and go relax. You've done a good job for tonight.
Saturday bright and early
Saturday needs to start bright and early. Pull out the content map. It's time to check the structure of your book. Does it still make sense to do it in that order? Better still, grab a convenient spouse or neighbour. Read your topics out to him or her... a sentence per topic. Did they understand what you said? Did you lose them anywhere? Make what changes you need to the content map and renumber as needed. Time for lunch. You'll be back shortly.
Saturday Afternoon
Take your content map, turn off spell checking and grammar checking and start writing. Each of the numbers represents a 100 word paragraph or section. Think of them as points on a PowerPoint slide. You have roughly five minutes of talking to fill in for each slide. So start talking with your fingers. Don't go back. Don't correct. If a word won't come try using a flag like "X@X@X'. This can be easily searched for later. Keep writing until you've finished your introduction and the first chapter. That's it for the day.
Sunday Morning Early
It's time to correct what you wrote yesterday. Spend about an hour re-reading and correcting. Correct any glaring grammar or word issues. Turn your spell checker back on. Once you've finished editing you're ready to finish the book. Turn off the grammar and spell checker again. Start from the top of the third chapter and write until you're out of topics. It's noon and time to put the book away again.
Sunday Evening
All that's left is to edit what you wrote this morning. Turn your spell checker back on. Turn the grammar checker back on and start reading. Check spelling; look for your error flag. Rewrite where necessary. You're now done. Congratulations.
