Breed Humbucker
![]() |
The mahogany body of this guitar is chambered to create weight relief. Ever since I've been involved with guitars I've heard complaints about the weight of Les Paul guitars.
The 490R and 498T pickups, which became the sound of this instrument for many years, have been replaced by the Burstbucker Pro. I like these pickups a lot, but many of my friends that grew up in the 90's prefer the more aggressive sound of the older pickups.
The neck has a special set up procedure called Plek'd, the dimensions have been modified in a nice asymmetrical shape to make it more comfortable than the old 50's neck. Other modern changes include Grover locking tuners, a very cool locking input jack, a locking bridge and transparent black control cover.
Gibson Les Paul Traditional Plus Review
Construction wise this is the same high end instrument as all Les Paul Standard guitars. One good thing about the Traditional is the body not being chambered like in the regular Standard.
The sound of the vintage Patent Applied For pickups has been modeled with the 57' Classic humbuckers. After playing this guitar I found them a lot crunchier than I was expecting. The neck is the regular 50's design and given that I was testing the Traditional Plus the flamed top was gorgeous.
Gibson Les Paul Studio Review
The main thing missing from the Studio compared to the Standard is the binding on the body and neck. There is a lot of luxury included in the new breed of the Standard but the old ones didn't have any of that.
The old Standard came with the 490R and 498T pickups which have a more pronounced upper midrange that translates into a more aggressive sound. Now that Gibson has made the Standard more vintage I'm glad this one has not changed.

DiMarzio DP165 The Breed Neck Pickup White Regular $69.95 DiMarzio created the Breed Neck Pickup in response to a request from Steve Vai for a fat, classic humbucker sound to contrast with the hotter, screaming Evolution-equipped guitars. The neck pickup is a bit louder and fatter-sounding than the PAF Pro pickups that Steve used on his earliest Jem guitars. Harmonics are easy to get, and 4-conductor wiring coil enables cool "notch tone" coil-splitting.The guitar part is recommended for the neck position on bolt-on trem guitars and bridge position on set-neck fixed-bridge instruments. As a neck pickup, the Breed has more than enough power to balance with high-output bridge pickups: it will work with the Tone Zone, Super Distortion and Evolution as well as The Breed bridge model. In the bridge position, it has a very warm, hot PAF tone--really smooth, with nice harmonics. |

DiMarzio DP166 The Breed Bridge Pickup Purple Regular $69.95 The Breed bridge pickup is not as hot as the Evolution, but it's got a warm and punchy mid-range coupled with a fat low end that rolls off before it can get muddy. If you've seen Steve Vai play in the last few years, you may have seen him playing an Ibanez Jem guitar with the word "Pogo" taped on the face. The Pogo is fitted with DiMarzio Breed pickups and is the result of Steve's desire to have a fat, classic humbucker sound to contrast with the hotter, screaming Evolution-equipped guitars. Harmonics come easily and the 4-conductor wiring coil enables cool "notch tone" coil-splitting. Recommended for the bridge position on solid body guitars. The Breed was designed to warm up and smooth out the sound of 25-1/2 scale trem guitars. It's got a lot more power than a PAF, but it also has a finer touch than high-output models. Picking hard will generate a lot of voltage, but a softer attack will clean up the sound of an overdriven amp. |
