The Basic Of Pigmented Stains

Pigments in oil - in this case, white spirit (paint thinner) or naphtha-were originally used for graining effects, and indeed still are, which is why they are called 'wiping stains'. They can be used for raw wood. The more common pigmented stains use a water-soluble medium, and are available on the DIY market as 'wood colour' (wood stains). Coloured varnishes carry pig¬ments too, insoluble particles in an oil/resin medium.
These stains are not easy to apply evenly, because the particles of colour stay on the surface or are absorbed with marked variation in rate and depth. Endgrain and open grain end up darker, as do scratches and blem¬ishes; while hard knots remain unaffected, the wild grain around them is especially absorbent. The ranges are easy to mix and inexpensive, but not suitable for the close-grained hardwoods.

Water-based products raise the grain of the wood so you will have to sand after staining, which will certain¬ly remove some of the pigment. This is fine if you want areas of shading such as in the corners of a panel but otherwise it is annoying, so once the stain is dry, but before sanding, seal it with an extremely thin coat of the clear finish you intend to use. Otherwise, rub down, wet the surface, then sand it again before you stain it to cut back the raised fibres. Do not use water-based wiping stains on veneers.

It is generally preferable to apply these stains with a brush, rather than a rag, because you can keep the wood wetter and brush out unevennesses and overlaps. Let the stain dry until the surface is just damp, then wipe it over with a clean soft cloth to remove excess pigment and spread it evenly. Overlaps are more easily to deal with than they are with penetrating stains be¬cause you can wet the surface again, with either solvent or a thin wash of the stain, and move the pigment around. Using the solvent medium alone will obviously remove some of the colour and lighten it.

Pigments look 'cheaper'. Because they obscure, even obliterate, the grain, they are good for disguising soft¬woods and making different woods resemble each other. Accentuating grain and getting shading effects is easier with these stains, because you have more surface control of the colour itself, but the colours are on the whole muddier and duller than those of the clear pene¬trating dyes, and not so light-fast.
