Online Beginner Guitar Lessons - What Should You Learn From Them?

You can find many online guitar lessons for beginners these days unlike the past. This may be good for those who want to teach themselves guitar as it is easily accessible. However, the most common issue faced by beginners is that they are so overwhelmed with the online information that they do not know what beginner guitar lessons should consist of.

Like them, you would not want to pick up a little here and there, and end up getting nowhere in your learning progress. 1. How To Hold The Guitar

There are 2 ways of holding the guitar: sitting or standing position. Sit comfortably at the edge of the chair and keep your back straight and relaxed so you would not develop backche later on. Pick up the guitar, hold it close to your chest or stomach, and rest the curved part of it on your thigh.

If you are playing in a standing position, you require a strap for support. Place the strap over your shoulder. Adjust it till the guitar is positioned mid body so that the weight is balanced. A comfortable playing position whether you are sitting or standing is important to provide access to all parts of the guitar without strain.

2. Hand Positions

For right-handed individuals, your left hand will form the chords while your right hand will strike the strings.

Proper Left Hand Position

Hold your thumb on the back of the fingerboard on the upper side of the neck. Your four fingers should be evenly spaced though it is tough do that initially. Try to place your middle finger and ring finger straight onto the fingerboard and slightly curve your index finger and little finger towards the frets.

Proper Right Hand Position

Hold the pick between your thumb and index finger. The thumb and pick should form a 90 degree angle.

Initially, you will have difficulties and feel pain in your fingers especially your left hand. The pain is sure to occur as you are not used to playing the guitar. However, it will pass with time as you practice and play it regularly. One good way to avoid pain is to dedicate some time for some warm up exercises which are included in some online guitar beginner lessons. These basic warm up techniques will help you to build strength, coordination and speed.

3. Chords

As soon as you have learned the playing positions, you will move on to reading musical notes. Chord is a combination of three or more notes played together. Online beginner guitar lessons would teach you basic chords and chord progressions that help you learn to play songs. Normally they use diagrams to guide you, some better courses use pictures of the neck of the guitar for easy reference.

Most guitar beginners face difficulty in chord progressions. Hence, they are unable to play a song smoothly. It is not easy to move from one chord to another and you have to remember the shapes as well. It definitely takes a lot of practice, time and patience. There are different variations for playing each chord. The trick is to take the shortest route to change from one chord to another while maintaining the general position of the left hand.

4. How To Strum

Strumming is basically made up of two strokes: down stroke and up stroke. Use your pick to brush the strings midway between the bridge and the end of the neck of the guitar whether for up strum or down strum.

Strumming may seems easy but it is one of the difficult areas for some beginners. They are unable to get the strum sounding right and smooth. The lessons will address this common problem and teach you techniques to great strumming so that you would not give up in frustration.

5. How To Read Tablature

Tablature (tabulature or TAB) is the simplest method of writing music for a guitar. This musical notation enables us to recognize notes quickly and easily. It indicates exactly where the fingers are to be placed by showing the strings as six lines and the numbers representing the frets. Reading tablature is an essential skill that would be covered in most beginner guitar lessons as it enables you to learn thousands of songs online.

6. Easy Guitar Songs
