Fly fishing with wooly buggers is one of the most effective ways to catch all types of trout in all seasons. As one of the easiest of all flies to tie, wooly buggers are often the first fly tied by beginner fly tiers. Over the years, hundreds of variations of the fly have been created utilizing the latest tying material innovations which is a testament to the fish catching abilities of the fly. This article reveals one of my favorite tips for attracting more and bigger trout in streams using wooly buggers.

This technique is extremely effective for brown trout on the South Fork of the Snake River in Idaho, but has worked well for all kinds of trout across the United States. The trick is to tie the wooly bugger on at just the right time during the "magic hour" of fishing that occurs in the evening just as the sun is disappearing behind the horizon.

As evening approaches, I search for a pod of actively feeding fish by looking for rises on the surface of the stream. For much of the evening, I will catch trout by fishing to the risers using dry flies. About an hour before I think it will be dark, I'll stop fishing and give the hole a break for about 30 minutes. Then the fun starts.

I'll tie on one of my favorite wooly buggers (typically black) in size 6 or 8. I then cast the wooly bugger upstream of the rising fish and let it swing down in the current. Many fish will take the fly on the downward swing. If this method isn't producing, then I will cast the fly out and strip it in just under the surface using short, quick pulls of the fly line. This often produces powerful, aggressive strikes as fish break the surface of the water attacking the fly. Remember to hold onto your rod and don't set the hook too hard or you will break your line.

Be sure and strip your wooly bugger back all the way into the bank (or to your feet if you're wading) before making another cast as many of the larger brown trout will follow it clear into shallow water before striking. Large brown trout often feed under the cover of darkness and pods of rising fish seem to attract them. It makes perfect sense for them to go where the food is.

If you can't find pods of rising fish, search for structures such as log jams or drop-offs that could hold big fish and work through them with wooly buggers right at dusk. Don't be afraid to strip the fly frantically as this can often elicit a chase response in trout. With all the talk of dead drifting, many fishermen fail to take advantage of this powerful technique.

You may only get 30-60 minutes of fishing before it's too dark to see, but this "magic hour" can be some of the most explosive fly fishing you'll ever experience. More than once, fishing wooly buggers in this manner has accounted for the biggest trout of the day.
