Guitars come in various shapes and designs; each meant to carry out unique functions within a band. The components of the acoustic guitar for example include a sturdy cedar body and 12 strings, and are mainly used by pickers (guitarists who use a small, flimsy device called a pick). This differs from the components of the classical guitar, which has only 6 strings, and is favored for solo performances. The classical guitar is mainly preferred by finger pickers.
Both guitars above, vary extremely form the electric guitar, the most popular feature of which is the "Tremolo Arm" which is a movable lever that alters the pitch of the note being strummed. None of the components of these guitars, and in fact the myriad other styles of guitar which are available are designed, take into account the components of aspiring left -handed guitar players whose main characteristics of course are the use of their left-hands for most life activities.
I am a 6 year veteran of the classical guitar myself, and the founder of "Picky Chicks" an all-girl band of small acclaim that plays a few weddings and Bar mitzvahs in the Boston area. I can tell you from experience that it is hard enough learning to play a regular sized guitar with small hands. At that time, I had not yet concerned myself with the plight of my left-handed "amigos" who were trying to learn on instruments predominantly configured for right-handed users.
So should we plead the notion of left-handed guitars for this group of lefties? As a simple online search will confirm, left-handed guitars are not mass-produced. They are only made to order, and are ordered chiefly by left-handers not interested in learning how to play on right-handed guitars, and are willing to spend money in order to achieve their wishes.
There have been many lefties (left-handed guitarists) in history. Jimi Hendrix was a well known leftie for example. Paul McCartney of Beetles fame is another of some notoriety. Both artistes had started out on right-handed instruments before opting to have guitars custom-made for themselves as their careers took off.
So is it recommended that lefties learn to play using a right-handed guitar? I would think that the obvious answer would be no, as the chord combinations (ie combination of strings played together to achieve the correct key/pitch) which are universally based on the right-handed guitar style, would sound "murky" if played with the guitar switched in the opposite direction, by a leftie.
Therefore it would simply make sense for guitar manufacturers to make accommodations for the left-hand guitarist by producing more of this style of guitars. Left-handedness is not a phase that people overcome with time. These persons are born with this predisposition as are right-handers.
