Having a CD release party without your CDs would be a complete disaster, right? It's surprising how many people book their event before they have even designed the graphics for their CD order. The common sentiment is generally, "How long could the CDs possibly take?"

The answer to that question is dependent on how organized and well-prepared you are!

The process for CD duplication or CD manufacturing can actually go quite quickly but even the most prepared clients have to be aware that the potential for delays always exists when you're dealing with custom-made products.

Possible examples of delays include:

• Graphic design issues.
• Data flaws in the master.
• Hard-copy proof request.
• Copyright issues.
• Credit card is declined.
• Machinery break-down.

Nobody is going to fault a band for being really excited to unveil their new CDs but it is very common for the excitement and anticipation of the end result to cause client to overlook really important details.

Here's one of the biggest misconceptions by musicians (especially the young ones): Don't think that your CD release party is supposed to be the first time anyone is supposed to see or hear your newly pressed music. If you adopt the approach of hiding your CDs away until your event you are going to handcuff yourself when it comes to doing proper promotion and whipping up excitement about your release event.

You've just spent considerable time and effort on your music to make it just right, so you need to take advantage of the opportunity to promote your band and your music. Your CD is only going to be 'new' once so you need to spend the time and effort to get your CDs heard by, and in the hands of, as many people as possible to get them excited about your release party.

Look at how the professionals in the industry do it - the record labels and movie studios. When they have a new release they spent lots of time and effort in promoting it before it actually launches. Think about it. How much interest do you think people will have in a new album or movie if they haven't heard/seen any teasers, glowing reviews, advertising or appearances? That advance promotion gets people interested, creates a buzz and builds anticipation and excitement for the launch day. The principles behind your CD release party are no different.

Here are a few tips on how to get started:

1. After you've placed your CD manufacturing or CD duplication order you should create a detailed and task oriented plan on what you're going to do with your CDs once you've received them and they meet with your approval.
2. Pick a release date but make sure it gives you lots of time to promote, promote, promote!
3. Don't pick a release date that competes with other big events or happenings in town because you don't want to have to share your target audience.
4. Set goals and completion dates for your promotional plans. Write it out on a calendar.
5. Remember - your CD release party is not for you. It's actually for your current fans and potential new fans, so do you best to come up with different things that will make people get excited about buying a ticket!
6. Promote yourself to people who will like your music. This sounds obvious, but you really do need to target specific areas where your crowd hangs out. Posters on the right streets and outside the right clubs, on the right website forums, social media sites and fan sites, in the right magazines and other print publications.
7. Get your CD reviewed by the right media people - find out which people, publications, radio programs, (etc.) will be inclined to like and play your style of music. Call and ask if it's okay to send them your press kit and always be polite and act professionally!

Take your time, plan properly and steadily build up the hype as your CD release party approaches.
