Band Bass

Brazilians love parties and festivals. The festival theme changes according to the region, month and season. Harvest festivals are particularly interesting and fun because they go back to pagan solstice celebrations during the month of June. These festivals combine religion, agriculture, music, decorations, food and coffee to create experiences unique to the town holding the event.
The São João Festival in Salvador, Bahia, is officially celebrated on June 24th although the pre and post festival preparations last for many weeks. The origin of this festival traces back to Portugal. It was probably introduced to Brazil by Portuguese Jesuit priests during the colonial times. The festival still has strong religious elements. However, the church services and religious processions are accompanied by partying, dancing and singing of a more secular nature.
São João Festival, like any other harvest event, celebrates coffee. This is no surprise since coffee is the national beverage in Brazil. During the festival it is impossible to walk around any commercial district without smelling the hot and sweet fragrance of coffee all around. Vendors even sell cups of coffee on the street from thermos flasks. Everyone welcomes you in their home or place of business with a cup of "cafezinho."
São João Festival offers the opportunity to drink coffee and to accompany it with delicious treats, desserts, sweets, fresh fruits or a more complete meal. "Feijoada," to many, is Brazil's national dish. The dish is basically a pork stew served with rice, another staple food cooked in many different ways, and a side dish called "Mendioca" (consisting of sausage, cut mustard and fried bacon). São João Festival in Bahia offers many attractions for locals and tourists alike. Salvador, the capital of the State of Bahia, is one of the country's oldest cities. Founded in 1549, it is located in the northeastern coast of Brazil.
São João Festival features square dancing and "Forró" music (pronounced "faw-haw").
- This is a type of country music from the Brazilian backwoods cattle country made famous in the 1940's by Luis Gonzaga, the singer, songwriter and accordion master.
- "Forró" is still very popular. During festivals the sound of accordion, triangle and zabumba fill the air.
- The accordion is a box-shaped musical instrument sometimes referred to a as a squeezebox played by compression and expansion of a bellows, which generates air flow across reeds. A keyboard controls which reeds receive air flow and this is how a multitude of musical tones are produced.
- Zabumba is a marching band bass drum, in wood or metal. Both sides of the Zabumba are played at the same time, the top side with a beater and the underside with a stick.
- The triangle is a small percussion instrument consisting of a metal bar bent in the shape of an open triangle, usually considered an orchestral instrument, but an everyday instrument for "Forró" music.
- These three instruments combined produce very unique musical sounds that, combined with the Brazilian rhythms, are quite unforgettable.
- During the festival, there are many bands comprised of 3 members, for obvious reasons, with each band member playing one of the "Forró" music instruments. It really is a true explosion of musical sounds all over town.
During São João Festival the sounds and crowds are literally non-stop 24/7. How do people maintain their energies? One of the ways is through the famous Brazilian "cafezinhos" that people consume almost non-stop.
How about a nice cup of Espresso gourmet coffee?
