Dvd Rental For The Disorganized
Online DVD rental can be a stressful business.
What's meant to be a time-saving and life-enhancing service - the DVDs popping merrily through your door and you, after picking one of your many bags of time in which to watch them, strolling down to the post box to send them back.
In fact, what tends to happen is this: you get home after a long day at work, flop - almost asleep already - onto the sofa and as your eyes close you notice at the envelope on top of the TV and think to yourself: 'forgot to take the flipping DVD back again'.
Perhaps this story is based, just a little, on personal experience but having talked to a number of DVD renters over the years I can attest that it's not just me.
Online dvd rental truly is an industry built on good intentions. Sort of like the fitness industry, then.
But there's no reason to let your gym membership and your dream of watching every Kevin Smith ever made fall by the wayside.
Cancel that gym membership I say and switch your online DVD rental service to a pay as you go plan.
Pay as you go works like a normal DVD rental by post plan but without the guilt.
You buy a number of credits upfront and then choose when you want them delivered.
This means that not only do you only get your DVD when you have time to watch it but you don't have to worry that you're not getting your money's worth when it's languishing on top of the TV/ in the hall/ in your bag while you're forgetting to return it.
A number of companies now run on this model, including UK cheap flights magnate Stelios' EasyCinema and Lovefilm pay as you go DVD rental, an offshoot of the Lovefilm company.
An alternative is to make sure that you're getting your DVDs from a company that 'rolls over' your unused monthly rentals.
The only problem with this is the problem tends to snowball. So if you're on a four a month DVD rental plan but you only have time to watch one you'll have seven to fit into the next month and if you only have time for one that month too you'll have ten.
However, taking a glass half full approach to this is not unheard of - ten DVDs lined up that you need to watch? That's your Sopranos marathon sorted then.
Of course, one thing that pay as you go can't do for the disorganized is to persuade them to make the right film choices.
So after a particularly wistful afternoon I still find Israeli documentaries popping through my door when obviously all I want to do is watch Confessions of a Shopaholic.
It's like the old saying goes: you can take the disorganized DVD renter to water but you can't make them think.
