Using your Voice as the most important Instrument in your Song Writing career.

Your voice and how you use it - is what is going to capture or turn off your listening audience, no matter how good your song lyrics are, or the melody line. If you cannot sing it comfortably yourself, then give it to someone who can, or who at least can complement your style to enhance the tone and presentation of your lyrics and music. Think of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. In the early Simon recordings they were pleasant and melodic enough, but magic happened when Garfunkel joined him - and their two voices became an absolute listening experience that even today is still worth hearing, and made them International Stars. I recently played their DVD - Concert In the Park, and was again taken in with Simon's melodies and song-writing abilities, and the marvellous combination of their voices that lifted the whole presentation up to a really fantastic level.

Here again I repeat, as per our last article, how important it is to use your voice correctly to emphasize the message in the song. The way you sing or present the mood of the piece, the lyrics: dramatic or happy or sad or intensely, has everything to do with the Melodic Phrasing of your vocal presentation.

Whether you string together your words quickly - due to lyric density, or draw out your words and vocal notes in a specific style. Examples are the quick repetitiveness of Rap, or the slow drawl of Country, or the hard driving rasp of Rock, compared to a balladeers easy listening style such as Chris De Burg. Do you want to lull your listeners to sleep, involve them, or arouse in them a passion for both your performance and delivery and the message in your song?

Think of Leonard Cohen's Halleluiah - performed by so many different artists. Some have moved and inspired us; others have left us cold and indifferent - simply by the difference in their performance commitment, of which their vocal phrasing is the most important.

Vocal Phrasing in a song is a completely different form of communicating when compared to normal speech patterns - and an extremely important one. Many a singer has killed an extremely good song due to a weak or indifferent vocal "phrasing" performance. Remember - you don't have to have the best voice, but if you deliver your song in a passionate and intense manner - as does Bob Dylan or so many other artists who do not have a gifted vocal range, the message still comes across as powerful and with "substance". The style and range of your voice pattern and vocal abilities will also dictate the phrasing of a song. Remember - it is the most important of all the instruments - whether it is you and your guitar alone, or Red Hot Chilli Peppers backing you, or the London Philharmonic orchestra - it will all fall flat if your voice and performance commitment and phrasing is not up to scratch. The vowel sounds: A - E - I - O - U are the most important to emphasize within each sylable and phrase. How you use them in each word or sentence must suit the song style and metre. I suggest you get lessons on vocal exercises to enhance your delivery performance if you do not have a great vocal range.

I recall a concert performance where Pavarotti was accompanied by Bryan Adams on stage. And although Adams does not have the vocal range of Pavarotti - it was an extremely good concert and vocal match, and a memorable performance purely by the sheer passion and delivery of both artists. Not to mention the brilliance of Pavarotti's phrasing, and the intensity of Adams delivery!

Again, your voice too can create Atmosphere and Mood: Think of an atmosphere that you want to create: happy or sad; intense and aggressive - or calm and relaxing; romantic and soulful - or loving and playful; sweet and melodic - or head-banging numbness. It is all in the attitude of the singer and of course the delivery, melody and phrasing of the lyrics within the musical piece being presented, that creates and dictates the mood and atmosphere of a song.

Be aware of and understand the meaning of Prosody: see our previous articles. In short it is the marriage between the Lyrics and the Rhythm and Melody and Chord choice of the song. Prosody is what binds everything together well: mood, substance, metre, phrasing, melody and chord progression choice.
