A ground fault circuit interrupter or GFCI is a type of circuit breaker which automatically breaks or interrupts an electrical connection that could potentially cause damage to a home or building. This prevents people from being electrocuted. GFCIs are usually installed in areas in homes and in commercial buildings where water and electricity are near each other such as in bathrooms and kitchens. Because water is a very good conductor of electricity, having a ground fault circuit interrupter would cut the electric current in the event that a ground fault occurs or when an overload or short circuit occurs while cleaning or cooking, preventing injuries and accidents.
Because of the important function of GFCI breakers, it is vital to regularly test them. Once you determine that you have a faulty GFCI breaker, you would need to replace it as soon as possible. GFCI breakers can be purchased from most hardware stores and electrical supply stores; however, you may want to consider buying them online or from other merchants who are selling used breakers. Buying used breakers can help you save more without compromising the quality of electrical equipment you are installing in your home. The only thing that you need to check would be if the used GFCI breaker has been properly reconditioned and if it comes with a warranty. Once you have a working GFCI breaker, you can then start to install it.
Installing GFCI circuit breakers can easily be done, as long you have basic electrical wiring knowledge. To help you out, here are is a guide on the steps on how to properly install your ground fault circuit interrupter circuit breaker.
You should first turn off the power in the panel before doing anything. Shut off the main breaker, which would most probably be a 100 or a 200-amp breaker located at the top portion of the electric panel. Make sure that you would be doing this before doing the actual installation process, as failure to shut off the power could increase your risk of getting electrocuted.
After making sure that the power is turned off, you should then unscrew the metal panel which frames the row of breakers. Set this aside. Look for the GFCI circuit breaker which needs to be replaced and then put its lever in the off position. Now, if you would be installing the GFCI breaker in a different position, you should clip off the correct metal tab using a pair of pliers.
You should then remove the old GFCI breaker; this should fairly be easy as it should easily come right out by popping it out. The connecting wires should then be unscrewed from the terminal screws. As you do this, make sure that you are taking note of which screw each of the wires correspond to. Again, if you are installing your circuit breaker in a different position, you should pull out the three wires which correspond to that position then strip off the insulation from the ends of the wires using wire strippers.
Before connecting the replacement GFCI breaker that you have, check that it is in the off position. After verifying this, connect the coiled wire on to the terminal screw which is on the grounding bar.
The next step would be to connect the two remaining wires on to the terminal screws of the GFCI circuit breaker. The black wire which the hot wire should be connected to the terminal screw marked "load power" or "power" and the white wire or the neutral wire should be connected to the terminal screw marked "load neutral" or "neutral". After properly connecting them, tighten the terminal screws into place. Put the GFCI breaker into the proper position, while ensuring that the wires have not been caught in anything or pinched.
After making the proper connections, you can then turn on the main power switch and then move the lever of the GFCI breaker switch into the on position. Look for the test button of the newly installed GFI circuit breaker and then push it. If it is working, it should switch to off position before shutting off the power.
Lastly, put back the metal frame around the row of circuit breakers before screwing it into place and then you can close the power box.
Although you could install your new GFCI circuit breaker if you have some electrical know-how, it is important to stop doing anything and contact a licensed electrician as soon as you feel or think that you do not really understand what you are doing. Since you would already be saving a lot of money on purchasing a used breaker, being frugal in installing it might not be necessary anymore.
When purchasing a GFCI breaker, similar to purchasing other used breakers, it is important to choose one that would exactly match the amperage and the type of the old breaker that you are replacing. Check the label on both breakers to make sure that the specifications are the same.
